With support from Chief Executives of London’s Trusts, Maudsley Learning have been asked to develop a pan-London training programme aiming to enhance mental health awareness and skills of paediatric staff in secondary care services. The programme, which will be at no cost to London NHS Trusts, will be delivered to clinical and non-clinical staff in paediatric settings through a bespoke curriculum. 

Simulation day

 

SWAMPI-CYP Simulation working at the mental physical interface 

This is a half-day multi-professional course aimed at core paediatric trainees, GP trainees and Foundation Year 2 doctors undertaking a paediatric placement, paediatric higher trainees, paediatric nurses, CAMHS professionals, core psychiatry trainees, and Child and Adolescent psychiatry higher trainees. 

It is suitable for clinicians involved in the management of young people with physical and mental health co-morbidity in the general hospital setting. 

Participants will be involved in a series of simulated scenarios using actors. Debriefing models are employed to give feedback to participants on their contribution and assist them to learn positively and constructively from the experience.

Learning Objectives 

After completing this course those attending will: 

  1. Have improved confidence, knowledge and skills in the management of young people with physical and mental health co-morbidity. 
  2. Be able to understand the role that non-technical skills (e.g. situational awareness, leadership and team working) play in the management of young people with physical and mental health co-morbidity.
  3. Have improved communication and collaboration skills within the multi-disciplinary team. 
  4. Have improved confidence in their ability to manage the challenges that can arise for young people with mental health needs in general healthcare settings.

 

Masterclass day

This is a half day multi professional Mental Health Awareness course which will include knowledge of basic disorders including depression, anxiety and psychosis, self-harm and suicidality, and eating disorders. 

Train the trainer

A course designed to achieve sustainability of training and to promote local Mental Health awareness through leadership and the use in-house champions.

MASTERCLASS

Who is the masterclass for?

The masterclass should be of interest to all clinical staff seeking to improve their knowledge and skills in working with children, young people and families at the interface between physical and mental health needs.

Several aspects of the masterclass may also be useful for non-clinical staff.

The half day masterclass will be delivered online in an interactive manner, using knowledge-sharing with experts, case vignettes, discussion of video material and facilitated conversations. Consolidation of learning will be supported through learning material available pre and post course on the Virtual Learning Environment. 

The content of the course has been developed with the help of experts by experience (patients and carers).

 

SIMULATION

Who is the simulation course for?

The simulation course will be of interest to all clinical staff seeking to learn and practice their skills in working with children, young people and families at the interface between physical and mental health needs, using a "hands-on" simulation based approach. 

The half day simulation course will be delivered online in a highly interactive manner for a small group of participants, using simulated scenarios with professionals role players and opportunities for facilitated de-brief and discussions. Consolidation of learning will be supported through learning material available pre and post course on the Virtual Learning Environment. 

The content of the course has been developed with the help of experts by experience (patients and carers).

 

TRAIN THE TRAINER

Who is the train the trainer course for?

The train the trainer webinar series will be of interest to staff with additional leadership responsibilities around training and education planning/delivery as well as workforce and organizational development. Participants will be invited to attend a series of 3 x 1.5 hours webinars over a period of 3 months. These will aim to support a sustainable organizational environment in which identification and better management of mental health needs is actively promoted, including through addressing the development needs of staff.
