About the course

The Eating Disorders Services for Adults Whole Team Training (EDSA WTT) programme, commissioned by Health Education England, is aimed at all Adult Eating Disorders teams in England. The programme is designed to equip teams with the collective and individual skills needed to provide high quality care and evidence based interventions in line with the AED WTT curriculum.

The annual training programme provides blended learning across 8 training days, support from a dedicated team mentor, and access to an online learning hub to ensure that busy teams can learn flexibly and translate this learning to practice. The first training programme run from March to November 2021, with subsequent years beginning in January 2022, 2023 and 2024. 

Up to 270 healthcare professionals from teams across England can access the training in 2021 and 240 per year thereafter. The programme is engaging with a wide array of stakeholders to develop and deliver the content ensuring the widest reach and impact possible. Service user, family and carer input features throughout, from the training design and delivery, through to evaluation and quality assurance.  

 

Who is the training for? 

The EDSA WTT programme is aimed at the needs of specialist community teams and those working across the patient pathway, including referring and inpatient services. Please see further details about eligibility criteria below.

Course content and timetable 

In 2021 the 8 training days will be delivered as live online sessions, including lectures, interactive sessions, and small group work. 

Day 1 – 23 March 2021 – Setting the scene: Flourishing teams, the patient and carer perspective, and the changing landscape of eating disorders. 

Day 2 – 26 April 2021 – Assessment and treatment planning: How to start well and work with key stakeholders.    

Day 3 – 23 June 2021 – Nutrition – Helping people with EDs re-learn how to eat well:  Physiological, behavioural and psychological considerations.

Day 4 – 24 June 2021 – Medical Health: Joint risk assessment and medical management with acute and primary care. 

Day 5 – 27 September 2021 – Psychological treatments: What works and for who? Getting the most out of evidence-based treatments. 

Day 6 – 28 September 2021 – Other treatments (family, medical, social): What works and for who? Getting the most out of evidence-based treatments. 

Day 7 – 16 November 2021 – Management of patients we struggle to help: Duty of care, rehabilitation strategies, applying MHA and MCA.

Day 8 – 17 November 2021 – Innovative treatment and service models: New strategies for changing times.

Eligibility Criteria and Expectations 

 

Individual training participants 

The EDSA WTT programme is aimed at the needs of specialist community practitioners and those working across the patient pathway, including referring and inpatient services. We will be pleased to enrol anyone working clinically with adults with eating disorders in these settings within the NHS, at whatever level of seniority and irrespective of professional background and training. This includes but is not limited to: psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, clinical and counselling psychologists, family therapists, psychotherapists, arts and creative therapists, dieticians, occupational therapists, peer workers.  

 

Considerations for Service Leads and teams 

This programme is repeated annually over 4 years.  Please consider what combination (professional group, levels of seniority) and how many team members you might want to release for the training course each year. Smaller teams may wish to all attend together while larger teams may wish to send a few participants each year. Please also consider proposing senior members of your team (including yourself) to serve as mentors, for while individuals or teams will be paid. 

 

Expectations of participants 

In order to take the most from the training we expect course participants to sign our training contract, asking you to: 

  • Make a commitment to attending all 8 training days, i.e. not dipping in and out but attending for the full day.
  • Make time for required course reading, homework, between-session reflection, and engagement with peers and mentors.
  • Make a commitment to reflect within their team and service how your learning can be translated into tangible action on how to improve the service you work in to optimise patient care.  
  • Notify the training team of any unavoidable absences.

 

Expectations of Service Leads and teams 

For your team to take the most from the training we expect you to sign our training contract, asking you to:  

  • Make a commitment to releasing staff to attend all 8 training days, managing associated service pressure.
  • Support participants to find time for required course reading, homework, between-session reflection, and engagement with peers and mentors.
  • Make a commitment to support your team and service to reflect on their learning and how to translate this into tangible action to optimise patient care.  
  • Support your team to engage with the training programme throughout the four years, e.g. accessing the online learning hub.
  • Have twomeetings with mentors prior to the training commencing 

 

Course certification 

Upon completion of the course we will provide course participants with CPD certification of attendance and topics covered, based on confirmed attendance and use of online learning materials. To obtain a certificate, course participants must attend 7 out of 8 training days.
