About the course
Mental health liaison services have expanded nationally as part of the NHS Five Year Forward plan and will undoubtedly continue to be a pivotal in the next plan for crisis and mental-physical interface work. Liaison services work in challenging environments and demand a unique set of knowledge and skills. This one-day course is for all psychiatric liaison practitioners and for those wishing to work in this area. At the end of the course learners will be expected to have gained an understanding of the core knowledge and skill set needed to assess and manage patients’ with mental health issues in the emergency department. In addition, specialist clinical topics, areas of service development. Leadership components of liaison work will also be addressed.
What you will learn from taking this course:
- Perform a thorough biopsychosocial psychiatric interview, mental state examination, and formulation.
- Identify risks associated with emergency psychiatric presentations and make a risk formulation.
- Consider indicators of organic pathology in emergency presentations.
- Assess for drug intoxication and withdrawal and formulate emergency presentations involving comorbid substance misuse and mental illness.
- Identify causes of recurrent presentations to emergency departments and recommend strategies for managing these difficult clients.
- Describe the respective roles of emergency and mental health staff, as well as some common challenges, involved in delivering mental health services in the A&E environment.
