About the course

PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE IS FOR SLAM STAFF ONLY. IF YOU BOOK ONTO THIS COURSE AND YOU ARE NOT PART OF SOUTH LONDON AND MAUDSLEY THEN YOU WILL BE NOT BE ALLOWED ONTO THE COURSE.

This one-day inter-professional course is suitable for a range of mental health and social care professionals involved in the care of people who have a mental illness, addictions and/or intellectual disability and want to improve their ability to discuss sexual health and reproductive issues with their clients.

Participants will be involved in a series of simulated scenarios focusing on sexual and reproductive health promotion advice for clients with a variety of mental health conditions. Specific debrief models will be used to allow participants to learn positively and constructively from the experience.

Participants will be expected to complete approximately 2.5 hours of pre-course online learning modules.

The course addresses the challenges faced when seeing such clients in different environments including inpatient and community settings. It aims to get different professionals working together to further their understanding of the challenges faced in these situations and build confidence in dealing with them.

The course aims to help participants to:

• Improve skills and confidence in the assessment and recognition of unmet sexual and reproductive health needs and their management of people with a mental illness, addiction and/or intellectual disability.
• Develop skills in risk assessment and risk management around sexual and reproductive health.
• Have a better understanding of the pathways for managing the sexual and reproductive health needs.
• Work more effectively with colleagues from across the multi-disciplinary team and between primary and secondary health care and social care when managing these clients.

Learning objectives

After taking this course you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate improved confidence, knowledge and skills in starting and managing conversations around sexual and reproductive health needs with clients with mental health illness, addiction and/or learning disabilities.
  • Undertake a comprehensive risk assessment for your clients with greater confidence.
  • Demonstrate better understanding of the role of other agencies involved in the care of clients.
