The Autism Core Capability Framework was introduced in 2019. It was in recognition that people with autism face many challenges in all area of lifeincluding when they are accessing mental and physical health care. It is also known that as a direct result of the knowledge gaps autism is sometimes not diagnosed or misdiagnosed.  The framework sets out core capabilities that clinicians and other people that support autistic people should be aware and able to follow in their practice areas.  The framework suggests 3 tiers of training depending on the responsibilities and job role of people.  The framework also refers to the tiers as universal (Tier 1), practitioner (tier 2) and expert (Tier 3)

This two-day training is for mental health professionals that are working in mental health settings and have little or no knowledge on autism. This incorporates Tier 1 and tier 2. The training is co-produced and will be delivered by experienced clinicians and autistic people as expert by experience. The training will offer the opportunity for delegates to interact with expert clinicians and hear personal experiences of experts by experience. This will help to highlight what is important to autistic people.

In addition, the training is designed to be interactive with a variety of activities and contain a mixture of theory and case scenarios. This will enable delegates to share their experiences as well as clarify any myths and personal perspectives. This will ensure delegates gain knowledge and skills that can be used in their practice to enhance the quality of experience of autistic people when accessing mental health services.

The key issues covered include:

  1. Undestand what is autism and autism diagnosis?
  2. Personalised support for autistic people
  3. Physical and mental health in autism
  4. Law ethics and safeguarding
  5. Diagnostic overshadowing in autism
  6. Transition from child to adult and related issues and challenges for autistic people

The fusion of Education and the Health Service is extremely exciting and now indeed essential; I am thrilled that St Mary’s is at the forefront of this. I am truly invigorated to disseminate many nuggets of wisdom and tangible strategies gained yesterday to my entire school community.

The knowledge and skills help children in many areas e.g. friendships, learning, attitude, dealing with problems at home and school. Skills will stay with them as they progress helping them to be reflective and emotionally resilient.
