Manaan is the Director of Adult Mental Health at Princess Alexandra Hospital, Brisbane, Australia and an Associate Professor at the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention. He trained as an Adult Psychiatrist in Oxford, UK and prior to his move to Australia served as the Clinical Director of Adult Mental Health in Cambridge, UK, for a decade. He is passionate about recovery and led PROMISE, a national (UK) award winning programme for enhancing patient experience and reducing coercion in mental health care. He has led transformation of community and inpatient pathways, embedding recovery in each aspect of care delivery. His clinical interest lies in crisis care and research interest is in suicide. He is the architect of PROTECT, a training framework to support people in suicidal distress. Presented and acclaimed across all five continents, PROTECT strives to create a new mindset amidst mental health professionals, one that shifts the focus of assessment and treatment from “what’s the matter with you” to “what matters to you”.
