Dr Penny Brown

Dr Penny Brown is a consultant forensic psychiatrist and research fellow at SLAM and the Institute of Psychiatry, with expertise and qualifications in mental health law. She has written extensively on mental health laws, and has carried out empirical research exploring the Mental Capacity Act and other mental health laws in practice. She has worked on policy projects with the Law Commission and the Department of Health, and in 2018 was seconded to the Parliamentary Office of Science and technology as a research fellow. She leads national training for Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval with Maudsley Learning and is the Mental Capacity Act lead for SLAM.
