About the course

This course is designed to enhance participants' understanding of advance choice documents, including what they are and how to create them collaboratively and effectively among clinicians, service users, and carers. Through a blend of face-to-face didactic teaching and hands-on simulation, the course provides a comprehensive learning experience, enabling participants to confidently understand, co-produce, and implement advance choice documents by its conclusion.

By the end of this course, participants (including service users, carers, and healthcare professionals) will be able to:

  • Clearly explain what an advance choice document is.
  • Describe who should be involved in creating one and understand their respective roles.
  • Engage and empower individuals, even those who may be reluctant, in the process of making an advance choice document.
  • Confidently complete an advance choice document using the provided template.
  • Approach the completion of advance choice documents in a trauma-informed manner that respects the person’s protected characteristics, as well as their cultural and spiritual background.
  • Implement a shared decision-making model that involves service users, carers, and healthcare professionals in the creation of advance choice documents.
