About the course

This two-day specialist training course, taking place on the 5th and 6th of November 2025, is specifically designed for CAMHS clinicians. It provides a comprehensive exploration of the legal frameworks that govern the care and treatment of children and young people with complex mental health needs. Participants will gain a practical understanding of their legal responsibilities, equipping them to deliver effective, lawful, and patient-centred clinical practice.

The course focuses on key legal concepts, statutory provisions, and safeguards essential for establishing the authority for detention and any proposed interventions.

In addition, the course explores circumstances where children and young people may be treated informally, the roles and responsibilities of parents and carers in decision-making, and the points at which the Mental Health Act 1983 (MHA 1983) should be considered. The relevant provisions of the MHA 1983 — covering hospital admission, care and treatment, discharge, aftercare, and community-based interventions — are examined in detail.

This course is approved and accredited by the London Approvals Panel. It is suitable for those seeking an Approved Clinician (AC) induction course in preparation for AC status, as well as consultants requiring AC training renewal. Please note: this course is not suitable for those solely seeking Section 12 (s12) training.

The course has been developed by Camilla Parker, independent legal and policy consultant; Sarah Cannell, consultant social worker; and Dr Dan Hayes, child psychiatrist from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM).

Applicants from South London & Maudsley NHS Trust are welcome to contact maudsleylearning@slam.nhs.uk to book their place.
