About this DBT training course

The aim of this two day workshop is to provide CAMHS and adult services clinicians with an introduction to DBT; an overview of the DBT model with an emphasis on practical skills. We aim to focus on enhancing clinicians’ skills and confidence in working with complex, high risk clients and the challenges that this often brings.

This DBT online training will provide knowledge and skills in the assessment and formulation of self-harm and other high risk behaviours, and how to help clients to replace self-destructive coping mechanisms with more adaptive skills. These will include mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. The workshop will also help participants develop their skills for managing the complexities of the therapeutic relationship, including working with intense emotion in sessions and client and therapist behaviours that get in the way of effective therapy.

Course programme

Through a combination of teaching, role play demonstrations, exercises and group discussion attendees will have the opportunity to practice using these skills experientially with case material in an active learning environment. We will also spend time exploring the challenges, obstacles and pitfalls of this work for clinicians and teams, and some effective ways to manage these.

This course does not constitute formal training in DBT.

Frequently asked questions

How do I train to be a DBT therapist?

APT Accreditation is one way to become a DBT therapist. At levels 1-3 you’ll become acquainted with DBT, and by levels 4 and 5 you can consider yourself a ‘DBT therapist’, assuming you have prior professional qualifications. If you have no prior experience, you’ll need more general qualifications in a subject like psychiatry first before specialising in this area. Please note, this course will not give you APT Accreditation.

How long does it take to train in DBT?

The Maudsley Learning online DBT training course is spread over 2 days, with 2 sessions at 8 hours each. If you are wanting to go down the APT Accreditation route it will take longer. APT courses range from 3 to 10 days or equivalent of learning.

Can I learn DBT online?

With Maudsley Learning you can take part in DBT training online via Zoom. The course will educate you on the basics of DBT, and incorporates a range of teaching styles including role play in a virtual setting.
