About the course

In this immersive, hands-on, five-day workshop, you’ll be exposed to a range of evidence-based teaching skills and you’ll get to try these out. You’ll take part in a range of small and large-group activities, including role plays on topics relating to your future teaching session or course.

Most health professionals know that teaching is an important skill to acquire, develop and demonstrate. But have you ever felt that your ad-hoc bedside teaching, audit or case presentations felt tokenistic or lacked continuity? How do you take your teaching ambitions to the next level? How do you design, develop and evaluate a values-based teaching session or course in collaboration with multidisciplinary peers?

How do you ensure that the patient perspective is integrated into your teaching from the outset and that your teaching model is compatible with the best medical education research evidence? And how do you ensure that your session or course stands the test of time and continues long after you move on?

Course programme

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding yourself as a teacher
  • Devising learning objectives
  • Writing a session or course curriculum
  • Identifying and embedding core values
  • Designing teaching informed by the evidence base
  • Developing your course through multidisciplinary co-production
  • Writing effective experiential learning activities
  • Practical experience and feedback on teaching
  • Evaluation methods and considerations
  • Creating a sustainable teaching course
  • Planning your next steps.

Background to the course

The course is based on knowledge, skills and expertise developed through PsychED UP, a simulation-based teaching course for third-year medical students at King’s College London (KCL). It builds upon ‘Extreme Psychiatry’, a successful voluntary course delivered at KCL between 2004 and 2018.

Following the award of a £10,000 Health Innovation Network (HIN) South London small grant in 2018, Drs Sophie Butler and Roxanne Keynejad recruited, trained and developed a multidisciplinary team of 40, to coproduce, implement and iteratively develop the new PsychED Up course, tailored to the training and educational needs of future doctors in the modern NHS, which is now embedded within the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s core psychiatry training programme. It was shortlisted for the Association for the Study of Medical Education (ASME)’s Teaching Innovation & Excellence (TIE) Prize, 2019.

Research

Let our team complete a full Training Needs Analysis for a department, directorate, or the whole hospital! We can work to complete this ourselves or work collaboratively with your own staff. Our standard outcome measures assess learner progress and produce a full report looking at wider impact of training using a range of tested assessment methodologies.
