About the webinar

Insomnia is highly prevalent among individuals with cancer, affecting approximately 25–33% during the initial stages of treatment. A proportion of these individuals may go on to develop longer-term sleep difficulties, often due to maladaptive sleep behaviours and ongoing physical symptoms. While the causes of insomnia in cancer are multifactorial, they are frequently reversible — and even chronic insomnia can respond well to cognitive behavioural interventions.

This webinar will explore the assessment and management of insomnia in cancer patients, with a particular focus on women with breast cancer.

  • Dr Greg Shields will provide an overview of insomnia in the context of cancer, including an introduction to the core principles of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).

  • Dr Nicholas Meyer will offer a practical update on the pharmacological management of insomnia.

The one-hour webinar will be followed by a 30-minute meeting of the UK Cancer Psychiatry Network. If you are interested in joining the network, please email greg.shields@slam.nhs.uk prior to the meeting.
