About the course

This one-day Maudsley Simulation course is aimed at clinical and support staff working with patients on medical or surgical wards, or in the emergency department. Participants will learn a holistic approach to helping patients with agitated or disturbed behaviour through high-fidelity scenarios using expert mental health actors. Structured debriefs follow each simulation and provide an opportunity for shared, cross-disciplinary learning.

Learning objectives

Confidently identify signs and triggers of agitation, acutely disturbed or escalating behaviour.

Approach patients with challenging or escalating behaviour using a holistic approach: managing physical, psychological and social aspects of their care.

Understand the legal frameworks relevant to patients in an acute hospital with challenging behaviour, including The Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and The Mental Health Act.

Formulate a management plan for disturbed or challenging behaviour in the acute phase and in the longer term.

Assess risk, including suicide prevention and self-harm.
