About the course

This one-day Maudsley Simulation course is aimed at clinical and support staff working with patients on medical or surgical wards, or in the emergency department. Participants will learn a holistic approach to helping patients with agitated or disturbed behaviour through high-fidelity scenarios using expert mental health actors. Structured debriefs follow each simulation and provide an opportunity for shared, cross-disciplinary learning.

Learning objectives

  • Confidently identify signs and triggers of agitation, acutely disturbed or escalating behaviour.
  • Approach patients with challenging or escalating behaviour using a holistic approach: managing physical, psychological and social aspects of their care.
  • Understand the legal frameworks relevant to patients in an acute hospital with challenging behaviour, including The Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards and The Mental Health Act.
  • Formulate a management plan for disturbed or challenging behaviour in the acute phase and in the longer term.
