About the course

This simulation course is designed for students enrolled in the MSc in Mental Health Studies and related programmes. The course focuses on communication with service users and carers, clinical interview skills, and professionalism in mental healthcare practice.

Through a series of simulated clinical encounters with patients played by professionally trained actors, participants will develop these skills and build confidence in working within a mental healthcare setting.

Each scenario is followed by a structured debrief facilitated by experienced simulation facilitators. The debrief provides an opportunity to reflect on the skills practised during the simulation, as well as the clinical themes and challenges that arise when working in a clinical environment.

Learning objectives

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Improve their knowledge and skills in the assessment and classification of common mental health conditions.
  • Develop confidence in applying these skills within a clinical context.
  • Improve confidence, knowledge and skills in working with patients’ carers and families.
  • Develop an understanding of the role of communication and collaboration in mental healthcare.
  • Gain an introduction to the basic concepts of professionalism and how they apply in a clinical setting.
