About the course

This one day, interprofessional training course is designed for staff working on older adult inpatient wards within South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Combining face to face teaching with immersive simulation, the course builds on existing knowledge and skills for supporting people living with dementia who experience Behaviours that Challenge (BtC).

Across a series of realistic simulated scenarios, participants will encounter professional actors portraying various presentations of BtC in dementia. Each scenario is followed by a facilitated, structured debrief, offering a safe space to reflect on the experience, explore communication approaches, and consolidate learning.

The course is underpinned by the CAIT (Communication and Interaction Training) programme, which provides practical, evidence based techniques to enhance communication and promote person centred dementia care. To maximise learning and enhance the simulation experience, participants are strongly encouraged to complete the CAIT e learning module on LEAP prior to attending.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe what is meant by Behaviours that Challenge (BtC) in dementia and demonstrate increased confidence in the recognition of BtC

  • Apply the concept of fundamental human needs to identify and address unmet physical and emotional needs that may underlie BtC in dementia

  • Demonstrate increased confidence in applying evidence based communication techniques when supporting people experiencing BtC in dementia

  • Demonstrate increased confidence in de escalating situations in which a person living with dementia has become distressed or agitated

  • Recognise the importance of a person centred approach by adapting communication according to different abilities and preferences of people living with dementia

  • Demonstrate increased confidence in recognising acute changes in behaviour or presentation in those living with dementia and consider possible underlying causes such as pain, hunger, or physical health deterioration
