About the course

This simulation session aimed at Physician Associates who have completed the eLearning modules and are based in either primary or secondary care settings.

Learning objective

By the end of the simulation course, physician associates will:

  • Build on knowledge from e-learning of broad categories of psychiatric illness and common mental health presentations.
  • Elicit a full psychiatric history and Mental State Examination and suggest differential diagnosis.
  • Recognise psychiatric emergencies, assess and manage mental health risks, and know when and how to escalate.
  • Use de-escalation models and strategies to engage with and support those who are in mental distress.
  • Communicate confidently and empathetically with confused, distressed, or agitated service users.
  • Support service users with symptoms and co-morbid presentations, bridging the interface between physical and mental illness, including long-term conditions.
  • Understand and apply any relevant legal frameworks, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
