Dr Gabriel Ellul

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Gabriel Ellul graduated as a Medical Doctor from the University of Malta in 2015 and began his specialist training in psychiatry after obtaining his medical licence in 2017. He became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK in 2019 and completed a Master’s Degree in Bioethics in 2020, receiving both the Dean’s Award and the Dissertation Award for his outstanding work. He concluded his psychiatric specialisation training in Malta in October 2023.

During his training, he worked at the Maudsley Hospital in London with the Trauma and Dissociation Service, the only NHS specialist service for complex post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and severe dissociative disorders. This experience provided him with insights into trauma psychiatry and body-based psychotherapy. He maintains a collaborative relationship with his UK colleagues, contributing to their research and clinical work from Malta, and is a member of the International Society of Studies on Dissociation and Trauma.

Currently, he works within the Mental Health Services in Malta, leading the medical team at Simblija Care Home in Naxxar, while also offering psychiatric consultancy services to Victim Support Malta. He has provided expert witness testimony in court cases related to alleged child abuse and serves as a visiting lecturer on trauma and personality disorders at the University of Malta.

His special interests encompass childhood trauma, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Complex PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and various dissociative disorders, including Somatoform and Conversion Disorders. His research focuses on the impact of childhood trauma on personality development, personality disorders, and neuroethics. In practice, he emphasises accurate diagnosis of mental health issues while exploring the underlying psychological causes of mental illness. As a Lifespan Integration therapist, he fosters close working relationships with psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists to support mutual clients effectively.
