Dr Penny Brown
Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist, Research Fellow

Dr. Penny Brown is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist and Research Fellow at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and the Institute of Psychiatry. She has expertise in mental health law and has written extensively on the subject. Her empirical research explores the application of the Mental Capacity Act and other mental health laws in practice. Dr. Brown has contributed to policy projects with the Law Commission and the Department of Health and was seconded to the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology as a Research Fellow in 2018. She leads national training for Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval with Maudsley Learning and serves as the Mental Capacity Act Lead for SLaM.
Education Background:
Dr. Brown holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in Mental Health Law from Northumbria University (2010). She also completed a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) at the University of Oxford (2005) and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Psychology and Neuroscience from the University of Manchester (2000).
