Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine
Dr Chris Danbury is a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Southampton and an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Southampton Medical School. He has extensive clinical experience across intensive care medicine and anaesthetics in the UK and Australia.
Chris studied medicine at St George’s Hospital Medical School, qualifying in 1990. Following training in general medicine and a period working in virology at St Mary’s Hospital, he specialised in anaesthetics and intensive care medicine. His training and clinical career took him through Oxford and Southampton before he spent a year in Western Australia, primarily as a Senior Registrar at Royal Perth Hospital and also at Port Hedland Regional Hospital.
On returning to the UK, Chris was appointed Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthetics at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, where he worked for 18 years before moving to University Hospital Southampton in December 2020.
Alongside his clinical career, Chris has developed particular expertise in medical law and ethics. He completed an M.Phil in Medical Law at the University of Glasgow under the supervision of Professor Sheila McLean and was subsequently offered a Visiting Fellowship in Health Law at the University of Reading. He is also Chair of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine’s Legal and Ethical Policy Unit, contributing his clinical and legal expertise to complex ethical and policy issues within intensive care.
