About the course

This one-day simulation course is designed for professionals working with children and young people facing mental health challenges in BAU, PICU, and Springfield CAMHS inpatient units. The course aims to enhance knowledge, skills, and confidence in areas such as emotional dysregulation, de-escalation techniques, self-harm and crisis management, inter-professional communication, and family involvement in care.

Participants will engage in face-to-face teaching, experiencing up to six simulated patient scenarios. Each scenario is followed by a comprehensive debrief led by course faculty. This interactive, small-group training allows participants to actively engage with simulated patients, followed by facilitator-led group debriefs.

Learning objectives
  • Enhance confidence in engaging, de-escalating, and effectively communicating with Children and Young People (CYP) experiencing mental health challenges in a CAMHS inpatient setting.
  • Apply knowledge of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) techniques, self-harm management strategies, and calming methods during simulated patient scenarios.
  • Demonstrate awareness of relevant legal frameworks and parameters for individuals under 18, including the Mental Health Act (MHA), Mental Capacity Act (MCA), and Competence framework.
  • Discuss and reflect on the significance of inter-professional communication when working within complex professional networks.
  • Explore the role of proactive family involvement in all aspects of CYP care.
  • Practice formulation and comprehensive risk assessments that inform management plans, particularly in high-risk and complex cases, including self-harm and suicidality.
