About the course

This full-day course is designed for multi-professionals working with young people, especially those enrolled in the MSc in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. It focuses on the assessment and classification of mental illness, along with preventative steps to promote positive mental well-being. The course also examines the essential role of the young person’s family and wider support network, highlighting both the challenges and benefits of collaborative working.

Participants will take part in a series of simulated scenarios featuring professional actors, followed by in-depth debriefing sessions. These simulations provide a valuable opportunity to build both technical and non-technical skills, develop confidence, and learn constructively from real-life clinical situations.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, attendees will be able to:

  • Enhance their knowledge of the assessment and classification of mental illness in younger people.
  • Identify and respond to signs of poor mental health.
  • Recognise the necessity for risk assessment and understand the steps involved in safeguarding.
  • Reflect on the challenges and benefits of working with service users' families and networks, and develop effective approaches to collaboration.
