About the course

Co-hosted by TFP-UK and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Meets the requirements of the International Society of Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (ISTFP) for didactic training element of TFP therapist accreditation.

September 3, 2024, to July 2025 (3 terms per year)
via Zoom on Tuesdays, 9:15-10:45 AM UK time.

Cost : £1,200 per year. (A concessionary rate of £600 or £950 is available for those who are currently trainees and not in full-time employment.)

The course covers the TFP object relations model of personality pathology, the TFP principles and techniques. Case examples will be used throughout. Participants will be encouraged and helped to find supervisors towards the end of the first term, initially to discuss existing cases and then to start assessing a patient for TFP. Each course participant will need to arrange their own supervision.

Participants will need to fund their supervision unless it is provided by their organisation.TFP supervision is typically weekly or fortnightly in groups of three to four for 60 minutes, with an accredited TFP teacher-supervisor. Each supervisee needs to present at least monthly for accreditation purposes. One-to-one supervision is another common model.Upon completing the one-year course, participants will know the basics of TFP. This course will also benefit those who have attended previous TFP training and wish to consolidate their understanding of this sophisticated approach.Participants who attend 80% of the sessions can obtain a certificate from the TFP-UK group and will be eligible to join the International Society of TFP.

To become a certified TFP therapist, the ISTFP requires attending 63 hours of training with accredited teacher-supervisor/s. This course will provide sixty-five hours, including one or two additional seminars that may occur on different days or times. Guest speakers will be invited to cover specific subjects.

Optional second-year

After completing the first year, participants will be encouraged to join the optional second year of the course. This will involve reading TFP papers from academic journals and hearing each other’s cases.

Accreditation

Accreditation with International Society of TFP

The ISTFP accredits therapists who have an existing mental health qualification, and have satisfied three elements of accreditation:

  1. attendance on a TFP introductory course involving 63 hours of learning of TFP principles and techniques
  2. two years of supervised practice, presenting at least monthly
  3. an examination involving discussing videoed clinical material

British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) TFP kite-mark scheme

Individuals who obtain ISTFP accreditation as TFP therapists, will be eligible to apply to the BPC kite-mark scheme. This does not grant BPC registration, which requires a professional training with a BPC-affiliated training organisation. However, all kite-mark holders are included in the BPC kite-mark section of the BPC website.

Relevant professions
  • Qualified Clinical and Counselling Psychologists with HCPC registration.
  • Registered Psychotherapists (BPC, UKCP, BACP or equivalent)
  • Psychiatrists (member of Royal College of Psychiatry) seeing patients for psychotherapy
  • Other mental health professionals who are experienced at working psychotherapeutically psychodynamically or with other orientations.
