Dr Jonathan Campion

Director for Public Mental Health and Consultant Psychiatrist

Jonathan is the Director for Public Mental Health and a Consultant Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. His extensive involvement in global public mental health includes roles as Public Mental Health Advisor to WHO Europe, Co-chair of the Public Mental Health Section at the European Psychiatric Association, Chair of the Public Mental Health Special Interest Group at the World Psychiatric Association, and Co-chair of the Public Mental Health Working Group at the World Federation of Public Health Associations. He is also an Honorary Professor of Public Mental Health at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Jonathan is deeply engaged in shaping and implementing public mental health strategies both locally and internationally.

Previously, Jonathan served as a Policy Advisor to the Department of Health from 2005 to 2011, where he played a key role in developing cross-government mental health strategies. His work has influenced the development of public health policies, including the creation of commissioning guidance for mental health services. Jonathan’s impact extends to the development of mental health needs assessments for regions across England, covering millions of people. In 2019, he published ‘Public Mental Health: Evidence, Practice, and Commissioning’ to support the improved implementation of public mental health interventions. His work continues to shape the future of mental health care, especially in the areas of smoking cessation, mental health promotion, and the integration of mental health strategies into public health frameworks.
