Transforming mental health education: Maudsley Learning's approach
Since 2014, Maudsley Learning has been at the forefront of designing and delivering innovative simulation courses for a diverse audience, including doctors, mental health professionals, midwives, students, police officers, social workers, actors, and more. Our highly skilled team has pioneered the development and delivery of simulation teaching in virtual environments, conducting small-group simulation sessions to enhance clinical learning.
Over the years, we have forged partnerships with esteemed physical health institutions such as King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. Additionally, we collaborate with various organisations, including mental health institutions, universities, and pharmaceutical companies, notably the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN). Our reach extends nationally across the UK, with recent programmes commissioned by Health Education England (now known as NHS England).
Our Simulation Training
Our extensive portfolio of mental health simulation training includes courses tailored to specific needs or delivered as train-the-trainer programmes. Maudsley Learning has been honoured with several awards, including The Education Team of the Year at the BMJ Awards 2018, reflecting our commitment to excellence. We believe we can support your organisation in upskilling students, residents, or staff to feel more confident and proficient in assessing and managing individuals with mental health conditions.
We developed the UK’s first mental health simulation training centre. Our simulation courses are meticulously crafted to achieve a transformative impact. Through simulated clinical encounters with patients portrayed by professionally trained actors, participants can enhance their skills and boost confidence in navigating mental healthcare settings. Following each scenario, our experienced simulation facilitators lead structured debrief sessions. These debriefs provide a platform for participants to reflect on their experiences, delve into the skills practised, and explore the clinical themes and challenges inherent in real-world clinical settings.
Online Simulation Training
Our high-fidelity simulation team developed the world's first protocol for delivering simulation teaching in a virtual environment and routinely runs actor-facilitated small-group sessions for enhanced clinical learning. This was published recently in two peer-reviewed articles (O’Sullivan et al., 2020a and O’Sullivan et al., 2020b).
Our peer-reviewed research has demonstrated improvements in knowledge, confidence, attitudes, and skills across multiple clinical domains, as well as in reflective practice, inter-professional working, and teamwork.
