About the programme

The Cannabis Clinic for Patients with Psychosis is the first NHS clinic in England dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing psychosis linked to cannabis use. Under the leadership of Dr Marta Di Forti, Consultant Adult Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) and Medical Research Council Senior Research Fellow at King’s College London, the clinic addresses a vital gap in care for this distinct patient group. Recognising the need for tailored interventions, Dr Di Forti and her team have developed bespoke solutions for those who often feel disconnected from conventional addiction services.

The Online Programme, comprising seven interactive modules and an array of resources, was created by the Cannabis for Psychosis team in collaboration with the Online Learning Team at Maudsley Learning, led by Carolyn Hodgman. This programme leverages the expertise of leading specialists and peer mentors with lived experience of both psychosis and cannabis use. The virtual learning environment combines psychoeducation, peer mentoring, and co-produced resources to deliver a holistic support system. Additionally, the programme offers live, private online sessions facilitated by experienced mentors, providing a safe and supportive space for participants to share experiences and grow together.

By transforming the virtual learning materials into an accessible eLearning programme, the initiative has achieved global reach, empowering healthcare providers and organisations worldwide to adopt this innovative care model. With a focus on tailored psychoeducation, peer mentoring, and collaborative learning, the programme represents a pioneering step in addressing the unique challenges faced by cannabis users with psychosis, highlighting the NHS's commitment to advancing mental health care through innovation.

Live online PEER group sessions
  • Days: Fortnightly on Tuesdays
  • Time: 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
  • Location: Online via Zoom

The live, online PEER group sessions take place fortnightly and are available to all first-episode psychosis patients enrolled in the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis programme. Referrals to the programme are currently accepted from the Lambeth Early Onset (LEO) unit and STEP Early Intervention Community Mental Health Teams. The sessions are designed to support patients in achieving a significant reduction or cessation of their cannabis use.

Each session combines psychoeducation, mentoring, and peer-to-peer support. Participants benefit from presentations delivered by subject matter experts, complemented by online learning materials. Additionally, patient mentors, who have themselves experienced psychosis associated with cannabis use and successfully ceased use, provide guidance and inspiration. The sessions foster a supportive environment where patients can learn, share experiences, and receive encouragement on their recovery journey.
