About the course

This course is funded by the SLAM NHS Psychological Medicine and Older Adults Directorate, aimed at improving the immediate management of patients after incidents of falls across its four older adults' wards within the Trust.

This half-day inter-professional simulation course is designed for a range of professionals involved in decision-making, care, and management of patients, particularly following a fall incident.

The course covers a series of evolving simulated scenarios, using professional actors as simulated patients to depict patient presentations after either witnessed or unwitnessed falls. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the simulated patients and perform a series of interventions aimed at managing the clinical situation, as would occur in real clinical settings.

Debriefing models will be employed to help participants learn positively and constructively from their experiences in assessing and managing the simulated scenarios. This process will be led by facilitators within a psychologically safe learning environment.

By the end of the course, participants will have increased confidence, knowledge, and skills in using a range of technical and non-technical skills for managing fall incidents on older adults' inpatient wards.

It is highly recommended that all staff attending this simulation course complete the e-learning component to consolidate knowledge and enhance the learning experience.

Learning objectives

By the end of this course, participants will gain:

  • Increased knowledge and skills for identifying the physical signs and symptoms of possible fractures and head injuries sustained by patients during a fall incident.

  • Enhanced confidence in performing initial assessment, management, ongoing review, and escalation processes for patients suspected of sustaining a fracture or head injury following a fall.

  • Greater awareness of the importance of non-technical skills—such as situational awareness, decision-making, communication, interprofessional collaboration, leadership, and triage prioritisation—and the ability to confidently apply these skills to clinical procedures in managing fall incidents.

  • Improved skills and confidence in completing documentation and reporting systems after a fall incident, with increased awareness of the tools available on the intranet to support this process.
