About the course

This short course is designed for individuals working in various contexts in South East London to enhance their awareness of mental health within the broader framework of health checks and preventative healthcare services.

Participants will acquire insight into recognising signs of poor mental health, learning to ask sensitively about mental health, understanding associated inequalities, and identifying potential risks. Additionally, the course will cover avenues for further exploration, responding to raised concerns, and providing guidance on referring to additional services and support.

Learning objectives


By the end of this course, participants will:

  • Gain awareness of how to identify signs and symptoms of poor mental health.
  • Acquire knowledge of approaches to identify individuals at risk due to poor mental health.
  • Develop confidence in engaging in conversations with community members experiencing early stages of mental distress.
  • Cultivate skills in recognizing when individuals are at risk of deterioration, utilizing strengths, and fostering resilience.
  • Expand their understanding of signposting and accessing appropriate support.
  • Take into account cultural factors and inequalities pertinent to identifying and managing mental health symptoms.
